Focus research areas

Our focal research areas are in the MAP tri-frontier region—Madre de Diós in Peru, Acre in Brazil, and Pando in Bolivia)—as well as in the eastern part of the Amazon, including the estuary-delta region in the Xingu and Tapajós basins, in Brazilian states of Pará, Mato Grosso, and Amazonas.

Map of Focus Research Area A: This area is on the east side of the overall region with the Amazon River crossing the northern portion of the area. It includes the cities of Santarem, Porto de Moz, Altamira, Uruara, and Ruopolis.

Map of Focus Research Area B, which is bordered by the east coast. Three large branches of the river cut through it. This area includes the cities of Mazagao, Macapa, Santa Cruz do Arari, Ponta de Pedras, and Portel.

Map of Focus Research Area C, which is in the southwest section of the region. It contains large sections of indigenous land and conservation units. This area includes the cities of Rio Brance, Xapuri, Cobija, Assis Brasil, and Iberia.

Map of Focus Research Area D, which is near the center of the region. The Jutai and Solimoes Rivers run through this area. This area includes the cities of Jutai and Fonte Boa.

Map of Focus Research Area E: the area is in the southeastern portion of the region. It has experienced a great amount of forest loss between the years 2000 and 2017. Land of the indigenous Xingu people runs through the middle of the area from north to south. The area includes the cities of Feliz Natal and Alta Floresta.

Map of Focus Research Area F: a small area near the east coast and immediately south of the city of Belem. It has experienced a great amount of forest loss between the years 2000 and 2017. The area includes the cities of Acara and Tome-Acu.
